Milk Prices Reach Record Level by Michael Benning

US - According the US Department of Agriculture the average retail price of milk is at $3.80 a gallon. That's 51 cents higher than back in February. Those milk prices have never been higher, but dairy farmer Scott Niess says the prices aren't decided at farms like these.

To figure out what's burning a hole in the wallet of people buying milk, look no further than the summer sun.

"At the moment our supply is on the short end because of the weather, our cows aren't producing as much," said Niess.

Because of that, supply is down, and it's not just here in the states, but also overseas in places like Australia where they are suffering an extremely dry summer.

"When you have a drought, you're not going to produce as much milk, so the world wide markets are having an effect on the American product," said Niess.

And while supply is down, demand is very much the opposite. In Rockwell, Cody Thomas picked up four new gallons of milk for his family today, and that's just half of their weekly amount.

"We're gonna keep buying milk no matter what because we don't drink pop, and milk's good for ya anyhow," said Thomas.
