The state's dairy cows produced 2.8 million pounds of milk in June, bringing cumulative production for the year to 21.7 million pounds, down 28 percent from the same period last year, according to a U.S. Department of Agriculture report issued Thursday.

The price per 100 pounds of milk rose to $27.70, up 30 cents from May.

The state's cow herds also shrank, dropping to 2,700 head, down 37 percent from a year ago.

Mountain View closed its doors amid rising production costs in June, leaving one dairy on Oahu and three on the Big Island.
