Dairy Cow Shortage Increases Single Sex Semen Demand

AUSTRALIA - The shortage of dairy cows in the national herd has pushed demand for single sex semen to an all-time high.

Used in artificial insemination, the semen has been treated to remove most of the male chromosomes and has a 90 per cent chance of producing a female.

Brad Aitken, from 21st Century Genetics, says with higher milk prices and an improved outlook, enquires have jumped four-fold.

"We've found the interest to be unprecedented really," he said.
