At the meeting there was a general view that the future timescale and structure for milk quota needed to be fully clarified by the EU, with the CAP Health Check an opportunity to do this. Long term stability for EU milk prices must be at the heart of decision making and several countries expressed a strong view that milk production in marginal areas must not be sacrificed.

Ian Stevenson added; “The EU Commission are focused on ending quotas and reducing market support, but farmers want a wider debate about the implications of these policies and the safeguards that we will need. Policies should not be budget driven. There was also a common desire to create circumstances where young farmers feel encouraged to join the industry. The debate is only starting but it was very useful for the UFU to be at the heart of these discussions”.
