Today’s tip encourages you to take account of nutrients contained in animal manures when setting fertiliser rates. This saves money and reduces losses of nitrate and phosphate. You can use standard figures for nutrient levels in manures, or have your own analysis done, but remember manures can be variable. Savings can be £50 to £150/ha.

Guidance is available from the MANNER computer programme (available free from ADAS, call 01623 844331) or from Defra’s Fertiliser Recommendations for Agricultural and Horticultural Crops (RB209), available from The Stationery Office at http://www.tso.co.uk/ for £15 + p&p.

World Environment day, 5 June 2007, is an initiative from the United Nations to help stimulate worldwide awareness of the environment.
