Milk Prices On The Rise Again

NEW YORK - In the race to see what costs more per gallon, milk is pulling way ahead of gas, and that can be blamed – in part – on the price of oil and the fight against global warming.

Beginning Tuesday, a gallon of milk will go up to $3.54 in New York state – 60 cents more than it was at the beginning of the year and 29 cents higher than two months ago.

Consumers aren't happy, but farmers say it's a reality we'll all have to get used to.

“I can't afford milk. My daughter, she drinks it all the time,” said one consumer. “I have two daughters. They drink it all the time. And I have to buy maybe two gallons for the week."

"I've never seen the price of milk go up so fast and so often, and it's going to continue. As long as we're competing for pricing with cows and grains and corn, it's going to continue,” said milk farmer Steve Schwartz. “We're trying to grow our way out of a dependence on foreign oil, and that means the price of food will go up."
