The closure of several dairy farms in recent years -- producers said they could not compete with the price of California milk shipped to Hawaii -- has led to 43.8 million pounds of local milk production from January through September, and 4.3 million pounds production in September. The first figure is down 19 percent and the second is down 20 percent from year-before levels.

The state cow herd is 4,200 head, including both dry and milking animals, down 21 percent from last year. Average milk per cow is up 2 percent.
