NFWI Campaign To Debate Future Of The Dairy Industry

UK - A nationwide campaign to raise public awareness of the plight of dairy farmers is being spearheaded by the National Federation of Women’s Institutes (NFWI).

The two-week campaign, to be launched in London next week, will see WI groups hosting debates bringing together farmers, processors, retailers and consumers.

It will be kicked off with a debate attended by Food and Farming Minister Lord Rooker, Sainsbury chief executive Justin King, Dairy UK chairman David Curry, All Party Parliamentary Group for Dairy Farmers chair Daniel Kawczynski, Sir Don Curry and NFU president Peter Kendall.

The NFWI said it wanted the debates to highlight the importance of the dairy sector to the rural community, economy, countryside and environment and look at ways forward to ‘give the British dairy industry a bright and better future’.

NFWI chair Fay Mansell said: “These debates give everyone the opportunity to contribute to the action we need to take to ensure that everyone receives a fair deal, from farmers to consumers.”

NFU Cymru president Dai Davies welcomed the debates and said they would convey the need for profitable dairy farms.
