Dairy exports increased by 138 per cent year-on-year, while dairy imports rose by 127 per cent. Powdered milk exports were 222 per cent higher than in 2005.

The large increase in dairy exports last year was mainly due to a substantial increase in Latvian whey exports to the Netherlands, Italy, Lithuania and Poland. Latvia exported dairy products worth LVL1.3 million (USD2.44 million) to the Netherlands last year, as compared with only LVL106,700 (USD200,767) in 2005.

Latvia exported dairy products to Gambia, Morocco, Ecuador, Andorra and Belize for the first time in 2006.
