Co-operative polls consumers on organic milk
UK - OMSCo, the Organic Milk Suppliers Cooperative, has conducted its first ever consumer poll to ascertain the public's opinions on organic milk and dairy farming. The research was carried out over the summer, at county shows around the country and the Organic Food Festival, to examine a variety of topics including the benefits of organic milk, perceptions of animal welfare and understanding of farming practices.

When quizzed on the most important factors when buying organic milk, most people (37%) thought the high level of animal welfare was paramount, with 91% of all respondents believing the welfare of organic cows to be either good or excellent. Of secondary importance was the fact that organic dairy farmers do not use artificial chemical pesticides – this was vital to 28% of those polled.
Health benefits were another noteworthy factor. Three quarters of people thought milk was essential for a healthy diet and almost a quarter (23%) stated that when buying organic dairy produce health benefits were the most significant factor. Knowledge of specific health benefits was high, with 65% of those questioned aware that naturally occurring Omega-3 fatty acid is found in organic milk.
