Feed supplier takes business to dairy herds with new £5m mill
UK - Times might have been hard for farmers in recent years, but they have not suffered alone - the associated supply industries have also been hit and many, especially animal-feed makers, have gone out of business. That includes once-familiar big players such as SAI and, more recently, BOCM Pauls, which have disappeared or closed their Scottish mills.
A handful survive and, in the case of Turriff-based Harbro - established only 30 years ago and so a new kid on the block - thrive and expand.
The latest demonstration of that came yesterday at an open day for several hundred farmers at Harbro's new £5 million feed plant near Lesmahagow.
Graham Baxter, managing director, said: "We are already the biggest suppliers of animal feeds to Scottish farmers with annual sales of 250,000 tonnes and a turnover of £51.5 million and our customers include six of the country's top ten dairy herds."
