Dairy producer-processor talks continue

CANADA - Talks between dairy processors and milk producers have already yielded some proposals that are now on the desk of federal Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Chuck Strahl, Dairy Farmers of Canada president Jacques Laforge reported at a producer meeting here Nov. 8.

Strahl initiated the dialogue between the Dairy Farmers of Canada and the Dairy Processors Association of Canada, under the auspices of a "Dairy Industry Working Group," last April.

The discussions are aimed at renewing growth in a domestic industry under the dual pressures of stagnant milk consumption and increased competition from imported dairy ingredients.

Laforge told a crowd of 350 farmers that one of the proposals received by the minister involves harmonizing regulations for product standards.

"The ice keeps holding us as we keep going to the other side of the pond," the DFC president said of the talks, which he suggested would last 12 or 14 months from start to finish.

More work remained to be done, and Strahl wants the process to continue, according to Laforge.
