US rule may complicate beef exports

US - American demands on Mad Cow disease safeguards could be an obstacle to reaching agreement on a new international meat hygiene code. Government delegates and meat industry representatives from around the world are in Auckland this week for a meeting of the Codex Committee on meat hygiene.
The committee chairman says the European Union's insistence that meat inspectors must be government rather than company employees is also an issue that this week's Codex meeting has to resolve.
