Tests urged for BSE variants

UK - Scientific advisers to the government are pressing for further tests on cattle brains to establish whether there are different strains of BSE in cattle. Italian researchers have identified in two cows a different brain signature from the traditional BSE and atypical cases have also been found in France and Japan.
Such cases have never been found in Britain despite it having by far the worst epidemic of the disease.
