Knowing origin only part of battle

In the long run, finding BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy) could boost smaller beef producers. It could prod American consumers to pay more attention to what they eat.
Up until Dec. 26, the calls fielded by A.J. Harland and his beef-producing friends at Illinois Crown Beef LLC usually centered on cost. "Then BSE hits," he says. "Bingo! All of a sudden they're a lot more interested in where their beef came from."
