Mad Cow, Bird Flu Affect Meat Production

WASHINGTON - America produced less meat after its case of mad cow disease and exported less chicken after its bird flu outbreaks, according to Agriculture Department reports. The department's March forecast for beef production is down 204 million pounds from its February estimate, to 25.3 billion pounds of beef this year. "The pace of slaughter, especially cow slaughter, in the first quarter has been slower," the department said Wednesday.
