MAF's farm monitoring surveys showed 70% of dairy farmers made a cash loss last season and based on Fonterra's current milk payout forecast; they will be in the red again this year.

MAF's regional policy manager in Hamilton, Phil Journeaux, says three quarters of Waikato and Bay of Plenty dairy farmers have already had four consecutive years of losses; ranging from $6,000 - $30,000 a year - and that is not sustainable.

He says most dairy farmers have to rely on off-farm income to cover their losses.
