EU – Russia’s import ban will be damaging to European cheese markets but particularly so in Holland and Germany, say Italian dairy analysts.

Of the 327,000 tonnes of cheese imported by Russia in 2013, 78 per cent came from Europe, of which almost 30 per cent was from Dutch and German processors.

This is according to Italian dairy association Assolatte which has stressed the long term impacts the Russian ban could have on EU dairy prospects.

Association President Giuseppe Ambrosi warned that efforts to strengthen trade links with Russia in recent years could evaporate, never to be rebuilt.

“The embargo stops the institutional relations and trade built through labour and effort,” said Mr Ambrosi.

“If the blockade lasts until August our products will be replaced by others and it will be difficult if not impossible to regain the trade.”
