This is following a vote in the European Commission last night about whether extra checks are needed to monitor food imported from Japan.

The UK, along with other European Member States, agreed that there should be pre-export checks carried out by the Japanese authorities of exported food and feed from the areas affected by radiation.

There will also be extra checks when the food arrives in the EU, in addition to the routine monitoring of imported food which takes place, to ensure that food from Japan is safe to eat.

Only 0.1 per cent of food imports received by the UK come from Japan and any food that is found to have levels of radiation above the legal limits will be prevented from entering the country.
