DairyCo Project Tackles Key Evironmental Challenge

UK - DairyCo has set out an innovative three year project to determine a crucial benchmark through the measurement of carbon footprints on GB dairy farms.

“This project will enable us to identify key ‘hot spots’ on-farm to improve business efficiency, which will automatically reduce the farm’s carbon footprint,” says DairyCo research manager, Dr Karen Wonnacott.

“The GB dairy industry is a world-leader in its efforts to tackle the environmental impact of dairy farming,” says Dr Wonnacott, “and this project demonstrates our continued commitment to reducing our carbon footprint. It shows both consumers and the Government that we are a responsible industry, and that we are actively addressing the environmental challenges we face.”

Currently the international reporting of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is too simplistic to give an accurate measure of GB emissions from dairying. This project aims to obtain a national annual average figure for GHG emissions that will be a realistic indication of emissions from our dairy farms.

The research will also provide a benchmark for all dairy farms to compare themselves to, and it will allow the industry to monitor progress in achieving the targets laid out in the Milk Roadmap.
