Manure Management Training

US - Workshops have been scheduled to provide Illinois livestock producers the manure management training they need to meet the requirements of the state's Livestock Management Facilities Act.

he last three Certified Livestock Manager Training workshops for 2010 will be held on 23 & 24 February and 9 March.

The curriculum has been updated to reflect the latest industry practices and offer new information to producers who may have completed the training before and are renewing their certification. The new workshop topics include winter spreading of manure, manure on forage crops and feed storage run-off solutions, operating safely around manure storages, foaming liquid manure storage, and innovative manure processing and odor control technologies.

The Livestock Management Facilities Act requires facilities with 300 or more animal units to have at least one employee certified in proper manure handling procedures. For facilities with 300 to 999 animal units, the employee must attend a workshop or pass the Illinois Department of Agriculture's Certified Livestock Manager exam. Employees of facilities with 1,000 or more animal units must do both to achieve certification.

The following workshops are being offered.

Beef and dairy only:

23 February - Stephenson County Farm Bureau Building, 10 W. Spring St., Freeport. This workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Registration begins at 9:15 a.m. The Certified Livestock Manager exam will be given afterward.

All species:

24 February - DeKalb County Farm Bureau Building, 350 W. Prairie Dr., Sycamore.

9 March - Sangamon/Menard County Extension Office, Illinois State Fairgrounds, South Gate, Bldg. 30, Springfield.

These workshops will be held from 8:50 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Registration begins at 8:15 a.m. The Certified Livestock Manager exam will be given afterward.

If more than one employee from the same farm registers, each registration after the first costs $20. The workshop manual can be bought at the time of registration for $62. The manual also is available on compact disc for $32.
