Cattle Slaughter Remains Tight In November
AUSTRALIA - Australian cattle slaughter remained tight throughout November, the third successive monthly year-on-year decline, influenced by a general shortage of cattle and tough trading conditions for processors and exporters.

Adult cattle slaughter for November totalled 626,000 head, down nine per cent on the same period in 2008 and the lowest November total since 1996, say Meat and Livestock Australia experts.
The largest decline in numbers for November was for female turnoff, which contracted 15 per cent year-on-year, to 284,000 head – with numbers in Victoria back 28 per cent. A surge in female turnoff early in 2009 across Victoria, along with improved seasonal conditions has assisted the contraction in female cattle slaughter.
Queensland adult cattle slaughter for November declined nine per cent year-on-year, with the male and female components contracting eight per cent and 19 per cent, respectively.
Total beef and veal production for November was back six per cent on the same period in 2008, to 173,340 tonnes swt, with a three per cent rise in average carcase weights, to 272.5kg/head.
