Cattle Farmers Seek Aid For Feed Shortage
CANADA - Cattle producers in Alberta are facing greatly reduced production of forage and pasture, as well as significantly increased feed costs as a result of the drought and cold spring weather that affected large areas of the province this year.

On behalf of these producers, Alberta Beef Producers (ABP) asked the Alberta Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development to approach his federal counterpart to initiate the process of providing AgriRecovery programme support to cattle producers suffering from the impacts of this disaster. AgriRecovery is the component of the federal-provincial suite of business risk management programmes designed to deal with natural disasters such as the current drought.
Now, ABP is encouraged by a letter received recently stating Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD), Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC), and other affected provinces are working with the federal government to assess the feasibility of an AgriRecovery response to the effects of the drought.
“We believe this is a positive piece of communication and encourage our producers to support ARD Minister George Groeneveld in exploring the possibility of the programme,” said Ben Schrader, ABP Cow/Calf Committee Chair.
