Heat and Humidity Killing Cattle
US - Up to 1,000 cattle in Nebraska could have died over the past few days because of the heat and humidity.According to veterinarians in the state, this could not have come at a worse time for cattle producers.
The have experience high losses because of the cost of feed and low market prices and not they are losing their cattle through heat stroke.
According to a report on KHAS TV, the heat over the last week has hit beef producers head on causing at least 1,000 cattle across the state to die from the heat - an event that happens every 10 years.
Alda veterinarian Matt Sullivan said that after examining the cattle, the producers are not to blame.
Dr. Sullivan said producers are taking the right precautions to keep the animals cool, but water does not always help. It can sometimes hurt by adding to the humidity, according to the KHAS TV report.
For producers, it means a big financial loss - about a thousand dollars a head, but the monetary issue is only half of it.
Cattlemen do not want the public to think less of them as business owners or animal caretakers.
