The UK’s largest dairy company has branded the product as Arla ‘Best of Both’ (Arla BOB®) with a yellow top, and will feature the new product in a large advertising campaign involving TV, press and other media.

The cooperative spent three years developing the technology to produce the new product, which involves collecting some of the naturally occurring protein in milk and adding more of it back into skimmed milk.

The new product contains 4.7g per 100ml of protein compared with 3.4-3.6g per 100ml for standard fresh skimmed milk.

Arla says the method delivers a taste and texture that is as good as semi-skimmed and fat-free, according to taste tests by 208 consumers.

The company says this and other recent product launches are part of a drive to add value to milk and support its farmer-owners.

Sarah Baldwin, Vice President, Marketing, Arla Foods UK, commented: “We are perfectly positioned to launch something genuinely pioneering and Arla Best of Both is one of the biggest innovations we’ve created in the milk category.

"Our innovation strategy is to develop great tasting and healthier products whilst investing to help drive consumer understanding of dairy which we feel is part of our responsibility.

“With organisations like Public Health England encouraging people to consider drinking lower fat milks, we believe Arla BOB will be a popular choice for many consumers.”

According to recent research conducted for Arla, 49 per cent of semi-skimmed buyers say they would buy skimmed milk but don’t like the texture and 33 per cent would buy skimmed but don’t like the taste.
