Total value of Great British cheese increased 2.6 per cent to £2.8 billion for the 52 week period finishing on 30 March 2014.

Values lifted from September, reaching £6.63/kg from £6.50/kg, where it had fluctuated for a year.

Cheddar took over half the sales, lifting 3.9 per cent, said DairyCo analysts, who added: “Growth in sales of private label Cheddar indicates that some shoppers may be switching to this segment as the price differential between branded and private label Cheddar increases.”
