Message of European Food Quality Heads to Japanese and Koreans

11 November 2013

JAPAN – The quality of European agricultural products is being promoted by EU Commission visits to Japan and South Korea this week.

EU Agricultural Commissioner Dacian Ciolos is to be joined by a delegation of European business leaders, to foster trading opportunity in an increasingly lucrative market.

Food exports to Japan (€ 5.2 billion) and Korea (€1.8 billion) have risen 26 per cent and 63 per cent in the past five years, said Mr Ciolos, adding that high-value products had particularly grown.

Speaking ahead of the trip, Ciolos said: "These are important markets with a strong appreciation of quality food products and therefore with significant potential for growth. I remain optimistic that agri-food sector exports have a major role to play in generating EU growth and aiding economic recovery and so I'm delighted to have the chance to promote our culture, traditions and the wonderful tastes of European food in Asia."

During the visit, bilateral discussion in Tokyo and Seoul will take place with respective Ministers of Agriculture.

Commissioner Ciolos will then team up to create an EU-Myanmar ‘Taskforce’, partnering High Representative Catherine Ashton and Commissioners Piebalgs and Tajani on 15 November in Nay Pyi Taw.
