OIE Reports FMD Outbreak in Mongolia

MONGOLIA - The Mongolian veterinary authorities have reported an outbreak of foot and mouth disease, affecting cattle in Dornod.

The outbreak was initially observed on 18 September and confirmed on 21 September after a reverse transcription - polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test was carried out at the State Central Veterinary Laboratory. 

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received an immediate notification on 26 September, wherein it was stated that the outbreak took place at a cattle farm in Dornod.

A total of 29 animals were found to be affected by the FMD virus (serotype A). All 29 animals were destroyed.

The source of the outbreak remains inconclusive.
