NFU to House: Listen to Family Farmers/Fishermen, Defeat HR 3012

US - National Farmers Union (NFU) President Roger Johnson sent a letter to US House of Representatives leadership, urging a no vote on H.R. 3102, the Nutrition Reform and Work Opportunity Act of 2013, and asking instead for conferees to be named to the farm bill conference committee.

“Family farmers, ranchers, fishermen and low-income families have waited long enough,” said Mr Johnson.

“The House needs to defeat this partisan legislation and address farm programs and nutrition together in a single, comprehensive five-year farm bill.”

H.R. 3102 includes $40 billion in cuts to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. SNAP benefits were stripped from the House version of the farm bill passed earlier this year.

“Not only would the cuts to SNAP included in H.R. 3102 deny benefits to at least four million low-income Americans, but these cuts are of a level that only serves to make compromise with the Senate-passed version of the 2013 Farm Bill even more challenging,” said Mr Johnson.

“I implore you to listen to the men and women who feed, clothe and fuel our nation, quickly defeat this bill, and move the conference process forward as quickly as possible.”
