Focused around the north of the country, the worst hit areas are Golan and Kineret with seven cases confirmed in each territory. Other affected areas are Haifa (1), Acco (1), Yizreel (1), Tsefat (1) and Acco (3) where 1,500 cattle are susceptible.

The information was received on 4 February and according to Dr Navad Galon, Directory of Veterinary Service and Animal Health, a total of 101 cases have been confirmed overall. Spreading south and west from the index outbreak the condition is now affecting dairy herds.

The disease seems to prefer the warm dairy stables rather than open, windy beef areas.

The case fatality rate is 2.97 per cent with 3 deaths of 101 with 64 cattle being destroyed. It is thought that 6185 cattle are thought to be susceptible.

In response 166,145 cattle have been vaccinated with the Sheep pox vaccine Jovac. Other measurements including quarantining, screening and movement control have been applied.
