The strike arose from disharmony in the farming community over some of the lowest farmgate milk prices in Europe being offered by Spanish processors which stifled dairy farming causing farms to sell up.

The Regional Minister for Rural Affairs, Rosa Quintana, assembled all interested parties and, after 3 hours of negotiations, the striking farmers unions accepted to sign an agreement to local assemblies. This agreement sets guidelines which increase milk price until January, when it should be above production costs.

For the strike to officially end the farmers unions have to officially sign the agreement which was expected to be done on Wednesday. The pact requires a fifteen day suspension of the strike and needs the Regional Minister for Rural Affairs to start negotiations with the Ministry of Agriculture to create mechanisms that level milk prices at 29 cents a litre.

Galician farms have sustained cumulative losses from the two-day strike of about twelve million litres of milk, which is a loss for the sector close to four million euros.
