Minister Arias Canete said that the Ministry of Agriculture has made a firm commitment to solve the problems the dairy sector faces.

He said he did not want to see imports of dairy products increase as the Spanish dairy sector disappeared.

With production costs increasing due to international commodity markets, the Spanish dairy sector is facing collapse since the prices paid do not cover the costs of production.

Minister Canete said that the Spanish dairy sector was crucial to the agricultural economy.

"Rising costs of production are a long term problem, and measures must be taken by G-20 members to prevent the price volatility currently being seen by the industry."

Faced with this grave situation, which is jeopardising the continuity of many farms, the Minister asked farming organisations to continue their work in the search for "effective solutions" and to prevent any further deterioration of the situation.
