The package on the future of the EU dairy sector aims to strengthen contractual relations between EU dairy farmers and processors.

Copa-Cogeca Secretary-General Pekka Pesonen said: “Faced with extreme market volatility and high production costs, it is vital to improve producers positioning on the market. Input prices have risen sharply by 19.8 per cent since 2005 whilst market prices have climbed by only 7.8 per cent. I call on Ministers and MEPs to approve the package by the end of the year and to find a compromise solution on the main outstanding issues."

Henri Brichart, Chairman of Copa-Cogeca milk working party insisted: “This first meeting between experts of the EU management committee and stakeholders of the advisory group on milk was useful. It improves cooperation and the exchange of information between stakeholders and national experts. It highlighted the fact that there is still a lack of transparency on the market which prevents the dairy supply chain from operating properly. I consequently insist on the need to propose further measures to improve market transparency and ensure producers get a fairer share of the price."
