The project will give a boost to the local dairy industry and ensure it remains one of Tasmania’s key economic drivers, according to Minister for Primary Industries and Water Bryan Green.

“This is major investment in the future of Tasmania’s dairy industry and the Circular Head region,” Mr Green said.

“It is a great opportunity for dairy farmers and will provide a huge boost for the local economy.

“I congratulate Tasmanian Dairy Products on its vision and the energy it has shown to get this project underway.

Mr Green said the development was also welcome news for Circular Head following Gunns’ intention to close its Smithton sawmill.

Mr Green said the project together with the $140 million redevelopment of National Foods’ cheese factory in Burnie enhanced the North-West Coast’s status as a major dairy producing region in Australia

“These investments to increase large scale processing capacity are crucial to the future growth of our industry

Mr Green said the State’s dairy industry currently employs around 2 700 people and generates about $500 million in farm and factory income.

“The Government is working closely with key enterprises across the dairy industry to help the sector reach its full potential.

Mr Green said the Department of Economic Development contributed $50,000 towards the cost of the feasibility study for the project.
