The agreement fostered by Dairy Australia in conjunction with Australian Dairy Farmers is the next step in a long relationship between the Australian and Korean dairy industries. It was finalised by Dairy Australia international market development manager Phill Goode on a recent trip to Korea.

Mr Goode said the memorandum of understanding would not only give the two farmers the opportunity to learn how Australian dairy farms operate but would provide the Australian industry with the chance to understand how Korea managed their recent foot and mouth disease outbreak from a food safety point of view.

“This will be a very positive experience for both Australia and Korea’s dairy industries,” Mr Goode said.

“This strengthens the existing good relationship we have with Korea at the manufacturing level and expands it to the farm level. The Korean dairy industry will also use the time to learn from our experience of deregulation following the Australia New Zealand Closer Economic Trade Agreement. This will be important as Korea moves to a new era of trade liberalization over the next 12 months.”

The trip will involve the Korean farmers learning about:

• milk safety and quality management;


• herd management;


• feed and pasture management;


• finance and accounting; and


• relationships between farmers and milk companies, government and industry associations.

The visit will be sponsored by Dairy Australia and the Korean Dairy Committee, with dates and host farms yet to be decided.
