Expert Validates Dairy Difficulties

NEW ZEALAND - AgResearch chief executive Andy West has defended the media against charges of overblown reporting of the effects of the worldwide recession on the dairy industry, dirty dairying on the environment and the potential impact of an Emissions Trading Scheme on farm profitability.

"You'll have heard accusations that those headlines are typical of the media overblowing these issues. They are not. Those headlines are accurate summaries of real issues for farmers," Dr West said at a National Agricultural Fieldays launch dinner at Hamilton Gardens last night, reports Chris Gardner, WaikatoTimes.

"There are some farmers lying in bed tonight, they tend to be early to bed, having trouble sleeping because they are worrying about those headlines. But I am optimistic that they can farm profitably while managing our environment responsibly."
