Dairy UK Asks for Stability at Milk Summit

“It is in everyone’s interests to see milk output across the UK stabilise, ensuring the continued provision of high quality dairy products. This requires farmers to have the confidence to invest.
Every link in the dairy supply chain should have the opportunity to make a sustainable living. “An enduring solution to the challenges we all face must be delivered by the market. Global trade in commodities such as milk powder, butter, mild Cheddar and cream sets the trend for farm gate prices. European deregulation means that volatility will be an increasing feature of these markets and we are supporting work to find ways of managing this.
The industry is also adding value to milk through consolidation, innovation, efficiency and supply chain co-operation. “Dairy UK is lobbying the Scottish Government and its counterparts in Westminster, Cardiff and Belfast to recognise the economic importance of the dairy industry. We are presenting the strong environmental and nutritional cases for dairy products and asking politicians for their support.
“In the long term, market fundamentals indicate that the UK dairy industry has strong prospects. Global demand growth will outstrip supply and the price cycle will turn. We want to help ensure that dairy farmers and processors are in the best position to benefit.”
