According to the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) Annual Report for the year 2007-2008, the national dairy plan focuses on productivity measures to enhance milk production. Dr. Amrita Patel, Chairperson, NDDB said, "The NDDB is also implementing a complimentary cooperative strategy by promoting "producer institutions" (new generation cooperatives) in about eight States. India is the largest milk producer in the world with an annual production of more than 100 million tonnes and a growth rate of 3.8 per cent.

In terms of value of output, milk is now the single largest agricultural commodity in India. However almost 46 per cent of milk produced in India is consumed as liquid milk and only 15 per cent of milk is processed and packed.

Despite various constraints and a lack of modernisation in the industry, India has become an important exporter of milk products. The Indian Dairy industries have invested huge amounts on hygiene controls to ensure their milk products meet international standards. The industry has created a position on export markets by providing consistently good quality products at a competitive price relative to traditional exporting countries.

Recognising the importance of the supply potential in India - Danisco is opening up two new separate manufacturing units for functional systems and for enzymes to serve South-Asian customers. The plant will primarily produce enzyme blends to service the markets of animal nutrition, food and beverages, fuel ethanol, grain processing, laundry detergents and textiles. Mr. Anders Wilhjelm, Executive Vice President noted that India has a huge potential for value-added dairy products; the functional systems plant will initially produce blends for the ice-cream market and will then expand to other dairy products.
