Export Refunds for Milk Products Good News for Sector
UK - The reintroduction of export refunds for milk is good news for the sector and will help balance the EU dairy market, according to NFU Cymru’s Dairy Board who met this week in Builth Wells.NFU Cymru President, Dai Davies, speaking after the meeting, said: "Mariann Fischer-Boel’s announcement about the refunds is welcome in the light of the difficult state of EU dairy commodity markets.
"NFU Cymru and farming unions across the EU have been putting pressure on the EU Commission to reintroduce refunds for dairy products to help balance the EU internal dairy market and stabilise market returns.
"This announcement by Mariann Fischer-Boel is a welcome step. We will wait to see precisely what levels refunds will be introduced at by the Management Committee, but under the circumstances this is a welcome announcement and will help boost confidence within the sector.
"The announcement may have little direct bearing on the British dairy industry since very little milk goes into bulk commodities and exchange rates are providing some insulation for EU commodity market prices which have crashed in the last year.
"However, the indirect effects of a weak commodity market cannot be ignored so the Commission's announcement is a prudent and welcome response."
