We will continue to lobby Defra to extend the scheme to other dairy products, including cheese. We will also be seeking promotional support for the scheme.

Subsidised milk has long been available to primary school children, but now secondary school kids will benefit as well. In addition, the scheme has been widened to include flavoured milk and plain yogurt.

We have been working closely with Defra since the European Commission revised the rules governing the scheme earlier in the year.

Edmund Proffitt, Dairy UK’s Processing Manager said: “We think this is a great initiative, which will bring the taste and nutrition of dairy products to more children.

“The calcium, vitamins and minerals found in milk and yogurt are vital to maintaining healthy bones, and this is particularly important for growing kids.”

A Defra consultation on broadening the scheme will be held in the autumn.
