Domestic milk intake fell five per cent in August, according to the latest statistics from the Irish government.

Domestic milk intake by creameries and pasteurisers was estimated as 551.2 million litres for August 2012. This was 5.0% below the corresponding 2011 figure.

Comparing the August 2012 milk produce figures with those for August 2011 shows that:

  • Total milk sold for human consumption decreased by 2.4% to 41.4 million litres.
  • Butter production was down 8.3% to 14,300 tonnes. See Table 1 overleaf for more details.
