February Milk Production Up 4.3 Per Cent

50-state cow numbers increased 9,000 head from last month and stand at 9.25 million head, up almost 1.0 per cent vs. last year. Production-per-cow averaged 60.7 lbs. per day in February, up 1.9 lbs., or 3.3 per cent greater than last year.
Atypically mild winter weather conditions across most the United States facilitated strong yearover- year production gains. States posting the strongest gains vs. the prior year (adjusted for Leap Day) in milk production include: Utah 8.5 per cent, Colorado 8.3 per cent, Arizona 8.0 per cent, California 7.1 per cent, Indiana 6.2 per cent and Michigan 5.7 per cent.
Despite ample milk supplies, the CME spot Cheddar barrel cheese price closed a penny higher at $1.5925/lb. There were two bids in the barrel market and a single bid in the block market. The CME spot Cheddar block price settled unchanged at $1.5825/lb.
Today’s spot butter trading session was fairly quiet compared to last week in which 26 loads of butter were traded. Cash butter closed 0.75 cents higher to $1.5225/lb. on a single bid.
