Number of Pigs in South Korea Plunges

11 April 2011

SOUTH KOREA - Foot and mouth disease has been blamed for the dramatic fall in pig production in the last quarter.

The number of pigs raised in South Korea plunged due to the massive slaughter of livestock affected by nationwide outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), a report showed Thursday.

Yonhap reports that, according to the report by Statistics Korea, the number of pigs raised here came to 7.04 million during the first quarter, down 2.85 million or 28.8 per cent from the fourth quarter of last year.
