May 2015 Highlights

Total cheese output (excluding cottage cheese) was 989 million pounds, 1.8 percent above May 2014 and 1.9 percent above April 2015.

Italian type cheese production totaled 423 million pounds, 1.9 percent above May 2014 and 1.4 percent above April 2015.

American type cheese production totaled 401 million pounds, 1.6 percent above May 2014 and 2.4 percent above April 2015.

Butter production was 169 million pounds, 1.9 percent above May 2014 and 3.2 percent above April 2015.

Dry milk powders (comparisons with May 2014)

  • Nonfat dry milk, human - 178 million pounds, up 9.9 percent.
  • Skim milk powders - 36.7 million pounds, down 38.3 percent.

Whey products (comparisons with May 2014)

  • Dry whey, total - 80.0 million pounds, down 3.0 percent.
  • Lactose, human and animal - 88.9 million pounds, down 10.2 percent.
  • Whey protein concentrate, total - 44.1 million pounds, down 5.0 percent.

Frozen products (comparisons with May 2014)

  • Ice cream, regular (hard) - 63.0 million gallons, down 10.8 percent.
  • Ice cream, lowfat (total) - 41.5 million gallons, up 5.3 percent.
  • Sherbet (hard) - 3.72 million gallons, down 3.8 percent.
  • Frozen yogurt (total) - 5.80 million gallons, down 4.9 percent.
