China Opens Markets to More US and Canadian Beef

This week, there was good news for the beef industry in the US and Canada after China agreed to open its markets to more beef imports from the two countries.

Beef exports to China had been more limited since 2003, when the first outbreaks of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) were discovered in the US and Canada.

The US’s Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack welcomed the announcement but said there was still more work to do in gaining true access to China’s beef market, “consistent with science-based, international standards for trade” – click here to read more.

Meanwhile, the Canadian cattle industry estimates that the new access for bone-in beef will generate an increase in Canadian beef exports worth approximately $10 million annually.

Canadian Meat Council President Joe Reda emphasised the importance of China for future exports: “Not only is China already the world’s largest consumer of meat products, demand for beef is projected to maintain an upward trend as Chinese consumers increase the presence of high quality beef in their diets.” – Read more.

In other news, food fraudsters will soon be thwarted much more easily as scientists at the UK’s Institute of Food Research have developed a technique that can detect the addition of just 1 per cent of horse meat into a beef burger.

The method detects miniscule differences between the sequences of amino acids that make up the proteins in horse and beef meat, and can even give an estimate of how much horse has been added – find out more.
