FTAs Will Boost Beef Exports

With the US Congress ratifying three free trade agreements with South Korea, Panama and Colombia, the US beef export trade has been given a further boost.

The FTA with South Korea is considered to be the most significant, since it represents a market, which through the first eight months of 2011 accounted for 16 per cent of all beef exports.

August was another outstanding month for US beef exports. Beef exports set an all-time monthly value record at $514.2 million on a strong volume of 256 billion pounds.

Beef exports are on pace to set new value records in 2011 and to eclipse the $5 billion mark for the first time ever.

Despite slipping slightly from July in terms of volume, a strong August performance pushed beef exports 26 per cent higher for the year in volume (1.8 billion pounds) and 39 per cent higher in value ($3.58 billion) - of this South Korea had bought 98,171 metric tonnes.

The global cattle disease situation has seen an outbreak of bluetongue reported in Malpartida de Plasencia, Cáceres, Extremadura in Spain. To date there have been 10 cases but no deaths.

In China, there has been an outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Ningxia with 389 cattle showing signs of the disease. All have been destroyed.

In last week's Beef Site newsletter, we quoted Jim Nicholson as being an MEP from Ireland, Mr Nicholson is in fact an Ulster Unionist Party Member of the European Parliament for Northern Ireland. We apoloise for this error.

Controlling The Amount Heifers Eat At The Feed Bunk
Heifers being prepared for breeding don't have to eat like pigs, stuffing themselves at all-you-can-eat feed bunks with unlimited refills, according to scientists at a Montana State University experiment station.
Counterintuitive Keys To Feeding Cattle Expensive Corn
Corn is high. Logically, that means feeders will sell cattle lighter with fewer days on feed, right? Not exactly. That’s what Shawn Walter, Professional Cattle Consultants (PCC), told attendees at the recent Feeding Quality Forum, writes Miranda Reiman from Certified Angus Beef.
Ukraine – Livestock and Products Annual Report 2011
