Editorial: Consumer Group Calls For Dairy Subsidies To End

The Organistaion Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) has put forward a case for dairy subsidies in the US to be cut.

In its weekly alert, the group said that the Department of Agriculture's labyrinthine system of subsidies, price floors, import barriers, and regulations, distort dairy markets, raise prices at grocery stores and costs taxpayers dearly.

Switching to a free market system for the dairy industry, which is among the spending reductions advocated in CAGW's Prime Cuts database, would save taxpayers $1.2 billion in one year and $5.8 billion over five years, the group said.

New Zealand Dairy Group Fonterra is expanding into Brazil, with the conversion of a cropping farm in Brazil's Goias State, into a pilot 850 hectare dairy farm.

This development is in line with the company's strategy to establish best practice dairy farms in the fast growing economies of Asia and Latin America.
