Editorial: Eradication Of Rinderpest

Global efforts to eradicate the deadly cattle plague, rinderpest, have paid off. FAO has spearheaded a coordinated, global effort to study the pattern and nature of rinderpest since 1994.

Over this period it has helped farmers and veterinary services recognise and control the disease, developing and implementing vaccination campaigns and, ultimately eradicating the disease within the framework of the World Animal Health Organisation (OIE) pathway.

This is the first time in history that humankind has succeeded in wiping out an animal disease in the wild.

It is hoped that the OIE will recognise all remaining countries as free from the disease in May 2011.

The EU has announced funding of €250 million to support programmes to eradicate, control and monitor animal diseases in 2011.

Diseases targeted through the programme include bluetongue, bovine tuberculosis, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) and rabies.

The above shows that progress is being made in eradicating and controlling diseases which adversely affect the cattle industry. It is important that countries continue to work together in combating these diseases.
