Editorial: Keeping The Beef Industry Afloat

In Canada, the British Columbian government has announced an investment of C$3 million, to support the beef industry through new marketing opportunities.

The government had also recently announced a C$2 million investment, that will fund projects recommended by the British Columbian Ranching Task Force.

In the US, the National Cattlemen's Beef Association is urging producers to connect with consumers.

A recent report has said that more and more consumers are familiar with the term 'factory farming'.

The NCBA says that consumers need to know about the conscientious animal care and the focus on food safety, to which the industry is dedicated.

Raise beef prices, or face a beef shortage, threatened UK farming unions this week.

There are concerns that volatile feed costs may result in fewer farmers finishing cattle this winter, causing supply to fall. However, consumer demand for beef is increasing.

The unions have said that farmers cannot afford to produce beef at current prices and are demanding retailers to give producers a fair share of the retail price.

The FAO has mobilised $1.4 million of funds for the procurement of feedstuff and for animal health vaccines in Pakistan. So far, 200,000 animals have been confirmed dead or missing, however it is expected that this will increase, possibly into the millions.
