Welcome to this week's newsletter
Editorial: 'Transforming' The Dairy Industry
We have 4 new features this week: Beef From Market Cows: Classification For most beef and dairy producers, marketing culled cows translates to 15 to 25 per cent of their annual income and clearly contributes to the profitability of their operation. The first of this three part feature from the Center for Research & Knowledge Management in the Department of Research, Education & Innovation at the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association looks at the classification of market cows. Overstocking: At The Stall And The Feed Bunk Overstocking typically occurs in two areas of the barn: at the freestall and at the feed bunk. Producers overstock dairy cattle to save building costs, or because herds grow before barns can be expanded to accommodate more cows, say experts from the Dairy and Research Centre from the University of British Columbia. Dairy: World Markets And Trade During the first half of 2010, international dairy markets were surprisingly strong with the price of Oceania butter and cheese averaging around $4,000 ton while skimmed milk powder (SMP) averaged above $3,000 ton. World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates - August 2010 Whilst slaughter of cattle is expected to increase, lower carcase weights mean that beef production is expected to be slightly lower than estimated. Milk production is expected to increase, as herds increase and cows productivity increases, according to the USDA World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates for August 2010.
